Bloodwork

Blood tests are an essential part of diagnosing what is ailing your pet, just as they are in human medicine. Blood tests can tell the veterinarian a myriad of things, from whether your pet is suffering from a specific condition, a general infection or if it is safe to perform surgery under anesthetic.

Common Blood Tests Used by Veterinarians

Chemistry – Varying Values

Chemistry is a general term for more specific testing of specific organs. Some chemistry values indicate kidney function, liver function, pancreatic function, and protein deficiencies. Your doctor will listen to your concerns and take their age into consideration when recommending which blood work may be best for your pet.

CBC – Complete Blood Count

This Testing allows doctors to view red and white blood cells. Depending on what these values may be they may reveal to us if your pet has Anemia, dehydration, infection or issues with healing.

Hormonal Values

Hormonal values can also be assessed via bloodwork. One of the most common hormonal tests performed is to check your pet’s thyroid level. Other specific tests may be performed upon necessity for your pet.

Benefits of Bloodwork

Blood work may be performed on a wellness basis. Having a wellness basis allows us to have a baseline to compare blood values to when your pet is sick. This may also help catch diseases or conditions more quickly. When your pet is sick, performing diagnostic testing is key in figuring out the treatment that will work best for them, thus having a reference allows us to collect more information on the issue as to if it is acute or chronic.

We collect blood from your pet during the visit and send it to an outside lab facility for running. Once results are received we send you a copy of the testing results and if anything is out of the ordinary a doctor will take the time to go over and discuss the results with you.
